Fish market and restaurants
Fiskebrygga, the fish quay, lies on the Gravane canal in Kristiansand. Live fish and shellfish swim in tanks. The fishmonger sells prawns and mussels, and right next door are several restaurants. Small boats are moored in the canal.
For visitors, Fiskebrygga is both a place to buy fish and seafood and a row of restaurants by the water.
The Gravane canal
The Gravane canal is around 380 metres long. It was dug in the second half of the 17th century, a few decades after Christian IV founded the town in 1641. The street grid from that time still shapes the city centre, Kvadraturen, with seven streets running parallel to the river and ten crossing them.
Location and access
The address is Gravane 8. From the centre, walk to the end of the Markens gate pedestrian street and turn right. The quayside has step-free access.
In summer there are live concerts at Fiskebrygga every week.
Nearby
Close by is Kilden, the theatre and concert hall at Sjølystveien 2. It opened to the public in January 2012, and its curved facade is made of wedge-shaped boards of local oak. Next door, Kunstsilo shows 20th-century Nordic art in a converted grain silo.
Also nearby is Odderøya, an island of 0.75 km². From 1686 it served as a fortification, and from 1800 to 1914 as a quarantine station. Today around 3 km of waymarked paths cross the island, and there are small beaches on its east side.
The district of wooden houses, Posebyen, begins in the north of the centre, and the Baneheia woods and lakes are a few minutes' walk from Kvadraturen. You will find more places in town under Sights.
